Applying for a Reception School Place
Is your child due to start school in September?
Choosing your child's school is one of the most important decisions you must make.
We hold a series of structured school tours for parents and carers applying for a Reception place for their child throughout the Autumn Term of each academic year. These are publicly advertised and places must be booked.
The Avenue Infant School is a very popular school amongst families, is oversubscribed and has waiting lists for each year group. This section is aimed at parents/carers of children due to start in Reception in September after their fourth birthday. We hope that you might find this information helpful in answering any questions you may have regarding your child starting school and help in preparing your child for their transition to school. Parent/Carer tours for children starting school in September 2025
Is your child turning 4 between 1st September 2025 and 31st August 2026?
If so, you will need to apply for their Reception school place by 15th January 2026.
We would love to tell you all about The Avenue Infant School. We are inviting prospective parents/carers to join us on a tour of the school with our Headteacher, Mrs Helen Morrall. At these sessions you will have the opportunity to talk and ask any questions you have to Mrs Morrall and see our fabulous school in action!
Numbers on each tour are limited, and it is preferable that no children attend these sessions. Booking is essential.

In-year transfer places
Moving to a different school at any time other than the usual admission to Reception class is known as an 'in-year transfer'.

Help and Advice if your child is about to start school
What is getting ready for school?
It is not just about letters and numbers. Can your child do these things by themselves?
- Using the toilet by themselves, including wiping properly and flushing the toilet
- Playing with others and sharing toys
- Can use a knife and fork and can open wrappers in a packed lunch
- Can get themselves dressed, including coats and shoes
