Aspirations Week

Our children recently spent an exciting week thinking about their aspirations for the future.  Aspirations Week is  part of the school’s drive to show pupils the exciting possibilities their future holds and to recognise how their current learning will help them.

Over the course of the week the children had visits from people in a variety of occupations, including graphic designer, robot engineer, vet, author, illustrator, hairdresser, gymnast, paramedic and police officer.  The pupils asked the visitors questions about their job and the skills they need for it.

Pupils also interviewed family members and friends about their occupations and presented their findings to their classmates.

At the end of the week, the children considered their aspirations for their future and each took home a framed memento of this goal.

The Children's Learning

The children’s learning during the week included tasks related to different professions. For example, designing illustrations for a book as an illustrator and looking after ‘animals’ as a vet.  The children then earned pretend money for each task they completed.

The week helped teach pupils about money management, spending, saving and budgeting, as, at the end of each day, they were able to choose to spend or save the money they earned.  There were a range of rewards for the children to buy each afternoon, e.g. extra playtime, a biscuit, and also some higher-priced real objects for the children to buy and take home to keep, such as a fidget toy or a book. The higher-priced items were to encourage the children to think about saving and give them real life experiences of spending and saving choices.  There was also a larger reward on the Friday afternoon, a Glow in the Dark Disco, which required the children to save to enable them to purchase a ticket.

Primary Futures Gold Award

We are delighted to share we have been awarded a Primary Futures Gold award for our recent work inspiring our pupils’ future careers through our Aspirations Week and also through the wider discussions our curriculum prompts, thinking about how their current learning could link to a future career.

Through hearing from a Robot Engineer, author, illustrator, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, hairdresser, Graphic Designer, the children learnt about these careers and the skills they need for them.

We are so proud to have achieved this award for investing time in developing our children’s aspirations for their futures.  A massive thank you to all those who gave up their time to help inspire our children.
